Mediation itself is not new, it dates back to Moses of the Old Testament, but using mediation outside of a court order or legal requirement (think law suits, divorce, custody) is relatively new.
Prior to 2020, all most all mediation was conducted in person. While in person mediation has its benefits, the demand on the mediating parties was quite profound. Time, financial, and logistical constraints were major barriers to participation, especially for families dispersed across the country or world.
Improvements and rapid adoption of virtual meeting technology (Skype, Google meet, Teams) have now made mediation the go to method to resolve all kinds of disputes, including caregiving, real estate, probate, inheritance, estate planning, financial planning, downsizing, and everything else that might cause interpersonal conflict. No joke!
